Lumbar disc replacement (also referred to as disc arthroplasty) is performed in an identical manner to ALIF. However, the prosthesis used is designed to allow normal disc motion rather than to eliminate motion (as in ALIF surgery). The lumbar device which Mr Sergides currently uses is the M6-L. The technology in these devices has improved and evolved in the last decade or so and is likely to continue to do so.
