Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (PLIF) is a procedure whereby 2 or more vertebrae are fused together via an incision in the low back. A range of indications exist including compressed nerves causing sciatica or radiculopathy, deformity / spondylolisthesis, severe back pain, infection and trauma. Degenerative spinal disease is the most common reason the surgery is performed.

During the surgery, pedicle screws are inserted in to each vertebra. The disc is removed and spacers are introduced in to the disc space to keep the vertebrae apart and maintain the correct anatomy. Bone graft is harvested locally from the facet joints, avoiding the need for a separate incision.
